The mallard duck is an unlikely visitor to the hills, but it is a regular visitor
along the Galisteo River, especially at the Highway Department pond near the SR-14
bridge. It is also easily recognized on the wing in echelon formation during migration.
Eats insects, roots and tender parts of fresh water plants.
