Anas platyrhynchos

Size: 20" [50.8 cm] - 28" [71.1 cm]

The mallard duck is an unlikely visitor to the hills, but it is a regular visitor along the Galisteo River, especially at the Highway Department pond near the SR-14 bridge. It is also easily recognized on the wing in echelon formation during migration.

Eats insects, roots and tender parts of fresh water plants.

Female: quack, quack. Male: raeb, raeb & low kwek.

Sighted at the Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve (a lush, well-watered preserve 3 miles [4.8 kilometers] north of Cerro Bonanza, near La Ciénega.)
