Size: 12" [30.5 cm] - Mockingbird

Mostly gray-brown; strong mustache; bill deeply downcurved; vent dark rufous; tail black.


LS reports: hypo.

Pictured: a curve-billed thrasher in a nest set in a cholla cactus.


MR reports: Curve-billed thrasher is a fairly common breeder in the park. Most often observed in brushy areas near arroyos.

Mimus polyglottos

Size: 10" [25.4 cm] - Mockingbird

Mostly gray, paler below; two thin wing bars and wing patch white; tail blackish with white outer tail feathers; bill short, thin. Sings continuously, mimics, and repeats.

Sighted at the Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve (a lush, well-watered preserve 3 miles [4.8 kilometers] north of Cerro Bonanza, near La Ciénega.)

Sighted at the Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve (an isolated high mountain group -- 7,000 to 9,000 feet [2,133.6 to 2,743.2 meters] elevation -- eight miles [12.9 kilometers] south of Cerrillos.)
