Bank Swallow - not present

Riparia riparia

Size: 5" - Swallow

Brown above; white below; brown necklace.

Barn Swallow - confirmed presence

Hirundo rustica

Size: 7" - Swallow

Glossy blue above; mainly pale orange below; forehead chestnut; throat deep orange; tail forked, outer tail streamers very long. Nest open cup of mud pellets/grass. Inside/under overhang. Fast flier.

Cliff Swallow - confirmed presence

Petrochelidon pyrrhonata

Size: 6" - Swallow

Crown, back, wings blue; rump buffy; underparts gray-white; forehead cream; foreneck chestnut; hindneck gray; tail black, short, square. Flies in circles high, nests in colonies under buildings, bridges. Especially common at Galisteo River bridges.

Northern Rough-winged Swallow - confirmed presence

Stelgidopteryx serripennis

Size: 5.5" - Swallow

Dull brown above; throat, chest pale brown; breast, vent dull white; tail notched. Flies with slow, deep wingbeats. Often solitary pairs.

Tree Swallow - not present

Tachycineta bicolor

Size: 6" - Swallow

Dark iridescent green-blue above; tail notched; snowy white below. Slow flier; short, flapping circles and then climb. Flocks in migration.

Violet-green Swallow - confirmed presence

Tachycineta thalassina

Size: 5" - Swallow

Crown, back, forewing green; back neck, flight feathers, mid-rump stripe and tail dark violet; white underparts continue up behind eye; sides of rump white; tail short, notched; bill tiny. Flight fluttery. Usually small flocks.

Sighted at the Leonora Curtin Natural History Area (a lush, well-watered preserve 3 miles north of Cerro Bonanza, near La Ciénega)

Violet-green Swallow, Northern Rough-winged Swallow, Bank Swallow, Barn Swallow - SUMMER

Sighted at the Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve (an isolated high mountain group -- 7,000 to 9,000 feet elevation -- eight miles south of Cerrillos.)
