Male: crown chestnut; comma-shaped, forward-leaning topknot; face and throat patch
black, bordered in white; upper parts, chest gray; belly yellow with large black
spot; sides chestnut; striped white.
Female: drabber. Head plain gray; topknot thinner.

The Tewa name for this bird is "sagebrush softness".
Sighted at the
Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve (an isolated high mountain group --
7,000 to 9,000 feet elevation -- eight miles south of Cerrillos.)
