Gambel's Quail - possibly present

Gambel's Quail
Callipepla gambelii

Size: 11" [27.9 cm] - New World Quail

Male: crown chestnut; comma-shaped, forward-leaning topknot; face and throat patch black, bordered in white; upper parts, chest gray; belly yellow with large black spot; sides chestnut; striped white.

Female: drabber. Head plain gray; topknot thinner.

Size: 11" [27.9 cm] - New World Quail

Back, wings, tail, sides pale gray; sides white stripes; entire neck and chest gray with black scales; Head gray with white crest.

The Tewa name for this bird is "sagebrush softness".

Sighted at the Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve (a lush, well-watered preserve 3 miles [4.8 kilometers] north of Cerro Bonanza, near La Ciénega.)

Scaled Quail - TRANSIENT (fall & spring)

Sighted at the Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve (an isolated high mountain group -- 7,000 to 9,000 feet [2,133.6 to 2,743.2 meters] elevation -- eight miles [12.9 kilometers] south of Cerrillos.)
