Burrowing Owl - not present

LS reports: recorded near SR-14 (San Marcos Arroyo & north 8 miles)
MR reports: Burrowing Owls are resident in prairie dog towns a short distance north and east of the park. Although I have not seen them in the park, I would not discount their presence at this time.

Horned Owl

Great Horned Owl - confirmed presence

Bubo virginianus
Body size: 23" - Wingspread: 55" - Owl
Dark brown; black spots above; underparts pale brown; heavy, dark brown bars; upper chest dark streaks; facial discs reddish brown, ringed in black; head large; eyes yellow; ear tufts fluffy.


MR reports: Great Horned Owls breed within the park.

Known as the Western Spotted Owl or the Northern Spotted Owl.

MR reports: heard within the village of Cerrillos winter 2001.

- Barn Owl.

IN OTHER NEIGHBORHOODS

Sighted at the Leonora Curtin Natural History Area (a lush, well-watered preserve 3 miles north of Cerro Bonanza, near La Ciénega)

Great Horned Owl

Sighted at the Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve (an isolated high mountain group -- 7,000 to 9,000 feet elevation -- eight miles south of Cerrillos.
