LS reports: recorded near SR-14 (San Marcos Arroyo & north 8 miles [12.9 kilometers])
MR reports: Burrowing Owls are resident in prairie dog towns a short distance
north and east of the park. Although I have not seen them in the park, I would
not discount their presence at this time.
Bubo virginianus
Body size: 23" [58.4 cm] - Wingspread: 55" [139.7 cm] - Owl
Dark brown; black spots above; underparts pale brown; heavy, dark brown bars;
upper chest dark streaks; facial discs reddish brown, ringed in black; head
large; eyes yellow; ear tufts fluffy.
MR reports: Great Horned Owls breed within the park.
Sighted at the Leonora Curtin Wetland Preserve (a lush, well-watered
preserve 3 miles [4.8 kilometers] north of Cerro Bonanza, near La Ciénega.)

Sighted at the Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve (an isolated high
mountain group -- 7,000 to 9,000 feet [2,133.6 to 2,743.2 meters] elevation --
eight miles [12.9 kilometers] south of Cerrillos.)
