Cassin's Finch - present occasionally in Winter

Cassin's Finch Size: 6" - Finch

Male (left in photo): striped brown above; chest rosy; sides lightly streaked; crown red; cheeks striped brown.

Female (right in photo): heavy striped brown.

Song fluty warbling.

House Finch - confirmed presence

Carpodacus mexicanus

Size: 5.5" - Finch

Male: back, mid-crown, wings, tail brown; sides, belly white, streaked brown, two pale wing bars, wide eyebrow; throat, chest, rump rosy red.

Female: upper parts, head plain dull brown; dusky below, brown streaks.

Song musical warble.

Lesser Goldfinch - confirmed presence, Fall - both Black-backed & Green-backed morphs

Carduelis psaltria

Size: 4.5" - Finch

Male: back, cheeks, rump olive; crown, wings, tail black; wing has white patches; yellow below. Male black above.

Female greenish above, yellow below; two white wing bars.


LS reports: Green-backed subspecies recorded July 24, 1998

Pine Grosbeak - not present

Pinicola enucleator

Pine grosbeaks are rare and irregular visitor to the high Ponderosa forests of Sandia and possibly Ortiz during the winter months. They may breed elsewhere in the mountains of northern New Mexico. The Cerrillos Hills contain no suitable habitat for them.
