Cuckoos, Roadrunners, Anis

Greater Roadrunner - confirmed presence

Geococcyx californianus

Size: 22" - Cuckoo

Buffy white with dark brown stripes; dark brown fluffy crown; blue and red skin behind yellow eye; legs, tail long; brown, wedge-shaped, outer tail feathers tipped white. Clucks.

In Keresan culture this is the bird associated with NADIR, which is the black direction. The same association is made with the unspecified "large night bird". In the depths of winter nadir may be seen as overhead. (See Bald Eagle and Golden Eagle for comparison.)

Sighted at the Leonora Curtin Natural History Area (a lush, well-watered preserve 3 miles north of Cerro Bonanza, near La Ciénega)

Sighted at the Ortiz Mountains Educational Preserve (an isolated high mountain group -- 7,000 to 9,000 feet elevation -- eight miles south of Cerrillos.)
