CERRILLOS HILLS STATE PARK

MINERS in the CERRILLOS HILLS - 1880

Prospectors

"Prospectors in NM. Pards in camp. No.298" is handwritten on the face of this stereo card.

These two men are also the subject of Prospectors strike it rich No.168". Though staged for the photographer, this is probably a reasonable representation of a temporary miner's camp. Note on the left side, the gunbelt with revolver hanging from the piñon tree and the wooden-handled shovel, two sledge hammers, and an iron pike leaned against the two pickaxes lodged into the ground. The repeating rifle is in the shelter between the two men. Though there is a coffee pot near the fire, the man on the right is pouring his drink from a bottle.
