Our ANALEMMA is a solar calendar. Each day the sun's path
across the sky is a little higher or lower, depending on the season, than it was
the day before. The rays of the sun passing through that south-facing circular
window (and through the small target in that window called a GNOMON) at noon
every day casts a bright spot on the floor of the INFOSCULPTURE. In the days
leading to the summer solstice the spot moves closer and closer to the south wall
(each day the Sun is rising higher in the sky), and as we move into winter it
works its way up toward the north banco (lower in the sky each day). The
"lopsided 8" design in the floor of the INFOSCULPTURE is derived from the path of
that noontime solar spot throughout the year. See it for yourself!
The INFOSCULPTURE was designed and built under the direction of the incomparable
Buck Dant. The ANALEMMA was suggested by one of our volunteers, Julia, who did
the computations and the design, and who, over the next year, is going to be very
busy calibrating it. Julia wants to hear your comments, questions and
suggestions for the ANALEMMA. Please send her
a note Thank you.

December 11, 2002 - The forms come off the colored walls of the
informational kiosk
Poured on December 4th, this is the first glimpse of our colored-concrete walls.
These photos are of the north banco, or bench. Artist Ricky Phelps did a fantastic
job on a difficult task, making it interesting, colorful and attractive, and also
blending it into the landscape.
