The RTCA program assisted the Cerrillos Hills Park Coalition (CHPC), a citizens
"friends-of group" interested in protecting the Cerrillos Hills, with the
successful purchase of approximately 1100 acres of land in the Cerrillos Hills
outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico. This is the largest and first track of land
purchased by Santa Fe County under a recent General Obligation Bond that created
the Wildlife, Mountains, Trails and Historic Places Program to acquire lands for
open space and trails. This newly acquired property will become the Cerrillos
Hills Historic Park, which will protect one of the Southwest's most important
archaeological, historical, cultural and scenic places, while making it available
for outdoor recreation. The purchased property is adjacent to another 2,300 acres
of BLM and State land, which is currently being proposed for joint management.
RTCA staff is working closely with Santa Fe County, CHPC, neighboring landowners,
BLM, State Land Office, and traditional users in developing and implementing a
viable park management plan. Part of the park plan will include creating and
identifying multi-use trail loops within BLM and the park land, the development
of trailhead and rest area facilities, and organizing a new docent-training
program for park volunteers and interpreters. For more information on this project
